The first edition took place in 2021, with 28 projects submitted from 16 cities across 10 states and the Federal District. The second edition, held in 2023, received 32 projects from 17 cities in 7 states. The winners were: Rua da Gente, from Benevides (PA); Plano de Bairro – Novo Horizonte e Região, from Jundiaí (SP); and the Infrastructure Program in Education and Sanitation (Proinfa), from Fortaleza (CE).
In addition to the awards, all the submitted projects and initiatives, of various scales and locations, are recognized and gain visibility by being included in the public map of actions for walkability in Brazilian cities — based on the milestone of the creation of the National Urban Mobility Policy in 2012.
All Brazilian cities can participate in the award, as there are three categories: small cities (up to 100,000 inhabitants), medium cities (100,001 to 800,000 inhabitants), and large cities (more than 800,001 inhabitants).
The award encompasses various initiatives, such as: urban area requalification projects focused on walking; road redistribution; street opening programs for pedestrians; tactical and participatory urbanism for street improvement, among others.
The prize is evaluated by an independent jury and is part of the Semana do Caminhar (Walking Week) program—an annual project by Instituto Caminhabilidade that celebrates walking and puts it on the cities’ agendas.
